Gary Hamel’s Management 2.0
W.L. Gore: Lessons from a Management Revolutionary
As a management researcher, I’ve had the opportunity to peer inside a lot of organizations. In doing so, I’ve learned that most big companies are pretty much the same, at least when it comes to the way they’re managed. The rituals of goal-setting, planning, budgeting and performance appraisal differ only slightly from firm to firm. There’s even less variety in the architecture of power. Hierarchical authority structures, top-down leadership appointments and order-following employees have come to nearly every organization I’ve studied-nearly. One amazing exception is W.L. Gore & Associates. Known mostly for its Gore-Tex range of high-performance fabrics, the company makes more than 1,000 products and employs 9,000 in 50 locations around the world. Wherever it operates, Gore is frequently ranked as one of the best possible places to work. Continue reading

Why So Many of Us Experience a Midlife Crisis

People often come to see me when they are in their 30s or 40s and say, I have done what was expected of me and had a career doing the right thing, now I want to do something else. Something that makes me feel whole/complete. Something that brings me joy and fulfilment and helps me fulfil a personal quest. But, I’m not sure what my purpose is.

Integrity: What’s Up With That?

What do you mean when you think of integrity? Like trust, integrity is something we all talk about, meaning many different things, but always assuming that everyone else means just what we do.  That leads to some vagueness and confusion. But a careful examination of how we use the words in common language is useful. Charles H. Green

Finding Focus

Do you ever have one of those days when you just can’t seem to find focus? When you fritter away your time on nothingnesses, distractions, wandering without really doing something important?

Or one of those weeks?

I have those days regularly. I can find myself “working” for several hours, but at the end of those several hours have nothing to show for it. I feel like I’m floating around, with no anchor, no focal point.

So how do we find focus?

6 steps to creating your own mini-retreat

It probably won’t come as any surprise for me to tell you I’m a big believer in ‘retreating’ from your everyday life from time to time. While I run retreats a couple of times each year, it’s not something I do as often as I would like for myself. After finishing my book, I decided it was time for me to have a few days away on my own. I’m so pleased I did – already, after just one day, I’m starting to feel refreshed and I’m completely relaxed. So, I thought I’d share my tips for how you can create your own mini-retreat. Beautiful, practical article

Is Life Predestined by Cosmic Will?

What’s Your “Why?”

Inspirational Leaders Have A Strong Sense Of Purpose.

If you think about it, you’re only going to follow someone if they clearly know where they’re going… and why.

In business, you know this to be true. Have you ever been stuck on a team with a “leader” who couldn’t clearly articulate why the group was doing what it did? Pretty hard to stay motivated. A team needs direction. A strong team of high-performers needs some direction, but more importantly, leading such a team requires inspiration. So any leader who aspires to the description of “inspiring” needs to start with a strong sense of purpose. On Leadership
